Running east–west in winter
Guide · 3 min read
Coast-to-coast freight means crossing the Rockies and the Sierra, and winter decides the schedule there. I-80 across southern Wyoming closes regularly for high winds and blowing snow, often for light and high-profile vehicles first. Colorado requires commercial trucks on the I-70 mountain corridor to carry chains from September through May, and California puts chain controls on I-80 over Donner Pass during storms.
How we plan for it:
- Check before dispatch. State DOT road reports and forecasts for the whole route, not just the origin and destination.
- Build in honest buffer. When a storm is coming, we tell you at booking that a delivery date may slip, instead of promising a time the road will not allow.
- Choose the route load by load. Sometimes I-40 through the south is the better trip in miles and hours, even when the map says otherwise.
- Call early. If a closure changes the ETA, you hear it from us when we know, so you can move the appointment, not after the truck misses it.
Safe freight that arrives a day late is a better outcome than a truck on its side. Our customers know which call they will get from us.
